[Gentle Writuary] Week 2: Read the Margins
Reflecting on what the past has taught us
Every writer carries a story written not just on the page, but in the margins. You’ll have notes from experience, seasons of learning, moments that shaped how you create. You may even have sticky notes on various pages of a journal, which may take flight if the winter winds blow just right.
This week invites reflection, not as self-criticism, but as compassionate curiosity.
When something feels hard, there is usually a reason. When discouragement lingers, it often carries information. Reading the margins helps us understand why certain parts of writing feel heavy and what they’ve been trying to teach us.
This is not about dwelling on what didn’t work. It’s about naming what’s true so we can move forward with clarity instead of shame. Moving forward with grace and compassion rather than guilt and disappointments.
Journal Prompts
Let your answers be honest and kind.
What has been the hardest part of writing or authoring for me? This month? The past few months? The past year?
What makes this feel especially difficult?
What patterns do I notice when I feel discouraged or disconnected from my work?
What expectations, either mine or from others, might be weighing on my writing life?
Reflection creates space. Space allows grace to enter.
Breath Prayer for Writers
Inhale: God, search my heart.
Exhale: Lead me to your truth.
What you notice here matters.
Nothing is wasted…not even the hard parts.
